The Malta Canoe Federation (MCF) has just been formally accepted as a member of the European Canoe Association (ECA).
The ECA, which falls directly under the International Canoe Federation, aims to promote canoe sport throughout Europe, be it flatwater sprints or marathon races, canoe polo, wild water canoeing, freestyle canoeing or even dragon-boat racing.
However, one of the most anticipated events on the continent are the European Championships.
Although Malta is yet to participate, it is anticipated that local canoeists will soon feature in these events.
The ECA also promotes technical exchanges among its member federations including international seminars for coaches.
In a statement, MCF president Peter Borg Costanzi said it is important for his organisation to form part of the European family of kayaking federations.
The decision to become affiliated to the ECA, he added, is in recognition of the fact that the sport in Malta has been growing in popularity over the years.
