The Malta Dockers Union said last night that the verification of union membership among port workers, carried out by the Director of Industrial Relations, confirmed its claim to represent the majority of port workers.
The union said its majority support was also shown on its membership lists, which it had made available to the director.
The MDU said the port workers had remained united behind it despite personal attacks and attempts to divide them.
They had ignored those who ordered industrial action which would have endangered their place of work in such a delicate moment of recession.
The MDU thanked the workers for their unity and maturity.
The GWU had also claimed to represent the majority of port workers. It yesterday afternoon issued a statement describing the verification process by the Director of Industrial Relations as 'shameful'.
