April 27, Researchers in Europe Without Barriers Conference
The conference will focus on the research climate and attractiveness of the European Research Area. It will try to identify ways to create a better environment for researchers in Europe, foster young talent for research and their engagement in ERA, and develop research skills and an entrepreneurial mindset among young researchers. Target participants include members of the European and international scientific community, research performing organisations, science foundations, representatives of the European Commission and the EU member states, young researchers and relevant policy makers. The event will take place in Prague, Czech Republic.

April 27, Making Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Work for SMEs
This conference challenges businesses and governments to develop better support measures, to help European SMEs to flourish and use their full creative and innovative potential. The conference will be based on the intensive work of an expert group established by the European Commission on existing best practices and on the policy recommendations proposed in their report. A mix of European and national policy makers, IPR and IPR enforcement practitioners and SMEs will ensure a lively and practice-oriented debate about this key issue for EU businesses competitiveness and will discuss the policy recommendations of the expert group. The conference is expected to gather about 400 European policy makers, IPR professionals, innovation support organisations, business intermediaries and SMEs. April 28-30, European Patent Forum and PATINNOVA 2009
The conference, which represents the first major event of its kind, shall seek to assess the impact of rapid innovation in digital technologies and digital design on the European economy and the intellectual property rights system. The event will include a series of workshops and presentations tackling the most pressing issues within this vast field, like whether the European intellectual property system supports innovation, the role of standards and knowledge transfer, as well as the suitability of the current patent system and procedures. May 14, Changing research landscapes to make the most of human potential
The conference is intended to encourage public and private research institutions to examine the role that an appropriately gendered management plays in the provision of equal opportunities, and the beneficial effect that this could have on science and technology. May 21-22, Conference on financial institutions and economic security
The purpose of the "Financial institutions and economic security" project is to delve into potential positive and negative aspects of the role played by financial institutions in economic security in developed, Western countries, and the implications for industrial innovation and economic performance. At the conference, the influence of financial institutions on employment security, retirement security, and housing security, as well as the interrelations among these forms of economic security in North America and Europe, will be at the centre of attention. May 26, Sustainable Development - A Challenge for European Research
The event will highlight the multiple ways in which European research contributes to global sustainable development. These include understanding the environment, technological solutions, and influencing mindsets and behaviours. The Commission's directorate-general for research is looking to gather scientists, industry, civil society and research and development policy-makers to gain insights into their views regarding what R&D can and cannot do for sustainability.
