One of three parked cars damaged in a fire last night belonged to Marsa councillor Anthony Buhagiar.

In a statement, the Marsa council expressed its solidarity with Mr Buhagiar and with mayor Francis Debono, who had also fallen victim to a personal attack sometime ago. It said it condemned such attacks on councillors when these were voluntarily contributing to the locality they loved so much.

The police said in the morning they were investigating the case. Initially only one car was reported on fire in Triq il-Jum, Marsa, but the blaze spread to another two vehicles.

The fire was reported at 2.45 a.m. Policemen tried to put out the fire using extinguishers but the fire brigade had to be called because of its intensity.

No one was injured.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli is leading an inquiry.
