Excavations were under way on the bridge leading to City Gate, in Valletta, yesterday as part of research in connection with the Renzo Piano re-design of the city's entrance. Excavations, commissioned by the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation, were also carried out at four points in Freedom Square as part of the fact-finding exercise being monitored by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority's Heritage Planning Unit.
