A woman this morning denied she tried to smuggle two packets of heroin into the prison by stuffing them into a cooked chicken.

Tanya Calleja, 40, was accused in court today of attempting to supply the drug to prison inmate Marco Pace, also known as Il-Pinzell.

Police Inspector Norbert Ciappara told the court that on January 12, 2006, Ms Calleja entered the prison carrying a chicken. She left it there to be delivered to Mr Pace.

After she left, prison officers became suspicious and checked the chicken, finding the heroin stuffed inside.

Ms Calleja pleaded not guilty.
