The Christian Democratic Students (SDM) have been elected to all the posts on the University students' council for the third consecutive year, scraping by their rivals ACT, a coalition of 11 student groups.

The student council elections were contested on Thursday by 22 candidates from SDM and ACT. SDM won 1,215 votes - just 207 votes more than the 1,008 votes cast for ACT.

Student turnout was very low, with only 2,812 voting out of the 12,000 potential voters from the University of Malta and Junior College.

SDM promised to implement all its electoral promises, which include getting a multi-storey car park built and fighting to retain student stipends, SDM president Lauro Fava said yesterday.

He admitted it was a difficult election and invited ACT to collaborate with the new team in the students' interests.

SDM also won the election in 2007 and formed the council again last year when no candidates other than its own came forward to contest.

The new executive council members are: president: Carl Grech, vice-president: Matthew Paris, public relations officer: James Cassar, financial officer: Nerissa Pace, international officer: Nadya Papagiorcopulo, international coordinator: Maria Psaila, culture and entertainment coordinator: Neil Ferris, education coordinator: Roberta Rizzo, secretary general: Vivienne Bajada and social policy commissioner: Rachel Cassar.
