President hosts lunch for Prime Minister, Opposition leader
President and Mrs Abela are hosting Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Opposition leader Joseph Muscat and their spouses for lunch at San Anton.
Both Dr Gonzi and Dr Muscat congratulated Dr Abela for his inaugural speech with Dr Gonzi saying that Dr Abela had touched upon the values that formed part of Maltese society.
Dr Abela thanked Dr Gonzi especially since his nomination was the Prime Minister's initiative and said that now that the seed was sown, it had to start being cultivated.
The President said that Dr Muscat was also responsible for the seed of unity that was sown and everyone now had the responsibility to help the seed of unity grow.
Dr Muscat said he truly believed that Dr Abela was the President of all Maltese and Gozitans.
On the menu is risotto with funghi porcini for starters, meat and fish for the main course and a hazelnut meringue with fresh strawberries for dessert.
President Abela is this afternoon due to pay a visit to President Emeritus Censu Tabone, who could not be present for this morning's inauguration.

It is totally amazing how even in the best of circumstances there are those who split hairs, raise doubts, look at the negative and suppress the positive.
The nomination of Dr. Abela as President enjoys the same level of popularity on his day one, as day 1825 of his predecessors. Some took a little longer than a few days to be fully accepted as President for ALL people, but at the end of their tenure, they were all labeled as 'exemplary' in discharging their Presidential duties.
George Abela delivered one of the best speeches I ever heard and if he practices what he exhorted all citizens to do, then no doubt, his Presidency will be most treasured.
It took a Nationalist Prime Minister to raise the bar and push real hard to dismantle political barriers and muster the courage to appoint someone from the 'other side'. But wait a minute -I always had the impression that a nation is one dimensional, so that makes Dr. Abela 'one of us, on the same side'.
Those who abstained from Parliament's endorsement of the new President did so because of their own personal misguided agenda which in today's politics, simply stinks.

This is all well and good. However, in future, one hopes that Prime Ministers and Leaders of the Opposition will have the courage to look beyond the political class and consider other eminent citizens from other spheres to be Presidents of the Republic..

@ Dr. George Abela - Congratulations MR. PRESIDENT
@ D Ellul
Every President Malta had since after Sir Anthony Mamo rose above party politics and served the country well as the first citizen of the Republic of Malta, being from the MLP or PN.
Yes there was always controversy before being made president but afterwards they all rose to the occasion.

We have a President for ALL the Maltese, irrespective of their political leanings. I'm sure the charismatic Dr George Abela will soon win over those few who are still not convinced of his suitability as President. His down-to-earth and captivating charm clearly came to light in yesterday's edition of Xarabank. Here's wishing H.E. every success in the next five years when I'm sure we'll witness measures to bring more tolerance and less parochial political pique in this island state of ours.

I have my doubts on the 'predecessors'. Every President we had was not a symbol of national unity as the person was always chosen from the government's side.
