The outgoing President Eddie Fenech Adam's political career speaks for itself. It was full of successes which far outweighed the failures.

This statesman's tangible achievements will continue to benefit a whole nation. As Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi often says: "We are judged by what we do". In this context recently he also spoke of winning elections as a result of not concentrating on winning elections but on enhancing the common good in the interests of both present and future generations.

This nation is now welcoming George Abela. While he will be carrying out his duties in a way which is distinctively his own he will equally follow in the footsteps of his predecessor who - living his faith and rising above political partisanship - will be remembered as the people's President.
