Francesca Borg has just qualified as an international Brevet Judge in artistic gymnastics after attending a one-week course held in Cyprus by world body FIG in conjunction with the Cyprus Gymnastics Federation.

Borg, who hails from the GymStars Club, is the first Maltese official to reach this level in artistic gymnastics. She started her career in judging when still 15 after attending a course conducted by British tutors at her club. At 17, she qualified as a regional judge before getting promoted to national judge along with other Maltese officials.

In Cyprus, the assessment of candidates was conducted by gymnastics legend Nellie Vladimirovna Kim, a former Olympic champion for Russia in 1976 and 1980. She is currently head of the FIG women's artistic gymnastics technical committee.

Borg is now qualified to judge competitions such as those of the Mediterranean Games, Island Games and Gymnasia Games.

In her days on the mat, Borg represented the country in the Monaco GSSE in 2007.

She is a former national champion and took part in various competitions outside the country.
