The Labour Party has filed a libel suit against the Nationalist Party's newspaper over allegations made in connection with its court case against the government to recover the VAT charged on car registration tax.

PL general secretary Jason Micallef and president Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi filed the suit against the editor of In-Nazzjon over an article published on March 21 entitled Eluf Jaqgħu F'Nassa Laburista (Thousands fall into a Labour trap).

According to the PL, the article alleged that its electoral office was analysing the list of the 17,600 people who applied to join the case that the PL was filing against the government contesting the VAT charged on the registration tax for vehicles. The newspaper claimed that this measure was being taken to identify who had not voted in the last election.

The PL said this was false and it called upon the court to order the newspaper to pay libel damages.

Lawyer Pawlu Lia acted for the PL.
