In The Times of March 27, Henry Frendo makes an urgent appeal to the Ministry of Education to ensure that when implementing its new educational strategies, the teaching of Maltese history is not downgraded. As Prof Frendo points out, the teaching of the history of our islands is even more urgent these days, when our youth is faced with a global culture which tends to downplay our traditional values.

I take this opportunity to plead against the removal of names of prominent persons - including educationalists - from schools. I refer in particular to the former E. B.Vella and Carmela Sammut Primary Schools at Mosta.

These names are not only dear to the people of Mosta but they also keep alive the memory of the persons they represent. These persons deserve to be remembered for their part in shaping our national identity, making it what it is today.
