The International Dockworkers Council, which represents more than 60,000 port workers around the world, is supporting the Malta Dockers Union in its position not to recognise the General Workers' Union's secret ballot amongst port workers tomorrow, the MDU said.
The purpose of the ballot is to determine the union affiliation of port workers based on a claim that the majority were GWU members.
IDC noted that, according to its books, 327 out of the 370 registered port workers were members of the MDU.
"Our affiliates are perfectly willing to have its membership list scrutinised by the official Registrar of Trade Unions, which is the correct way to clear up any misunderstandings," the IDU said.
