Kevin Borg in Malta after Swedish Pop Idol success

Kevin Borg signs autographs as fans lay siege on his car this morning.

Maltese singer Kevin Borg returned to Malta for the first time today after winning the Swedish Pop Idol contest, and said he was overwhelmed by the welcome.

Some 100 fans greeted him at the airport, along with his family and the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Mario de Marco.

Kevin has been designated Malta's tourism ambassador in Scandinavia by the Malta Tourism Authority, and he flew in on the first flight this year of SAS Scandinavian Airlines.

"It's great to be back," the young singer said at the airport, smiling broadly. He said he looked forward to meeting as many Maltese as possible.

The young singer will be here for a few days and will make an appearance at Exotique this evening where fans are likely to get a taste of his new album. Talks are also under way on a possible concert in Malta in August.

Dr de Marco after welcoming Kevin and praising him for his achievement, said the return of SAS was important for Malta. It was particularly significant, he said, that the airline had confirmed its return to Malta last year, at a time when oil prices were rising and airlines were shedding routes.

One of the keys for Malta's tourism growth was increased accessibility, Dr de Marco said, and this was a factor which the government and the MTA were placing strong emphasis on. Indeed, seat capacity would rise slightly in the summer.

SAS will be flying twice a week on Thursday and Sunday with the times being ideal for a long weekend in Malta or Stockholm

Tassew Prosit Kevin. I have no doubt that your career will move beyond pop idol. No doubt its lots of hard work but you have a great voice and got all it takes to make it bigger and bigger.
Sylvana Zarb Darmanin (on 4/4/09)
VERY WELL DONE, KEVIN!! You have indeed made us proud! Wishing you further successes in your life!

As for Mr. Joe Fenech and others: SOUR GRAPES!! Where has our national pride gone?! We have this magnificent singer and certain individuals try to downsize his great achievement. Shame.
Conrad Borg Manché (on 4/4/09)
We are all proud of you Kevin. Well done. Wish you more and more success.

I am Maltese and have lived in the UK for decades. It makes me feel very proud to read stories like the one here about Kevin Borg or of any Maltese persons doing anything to make Malta proud.
Jean Marc (on 3/4/09)
Just been reading your comments about that Great Great Win by Kevin Borg. He used his talent, believed in his abilities, went to a foreign country, learned their language and beat 8,000 contestants. Now, if anyone is calling that luck, or just another tv win he is being spiteful and ENVIOUS. Kevin you proved to your family, and the WHOLE of EUROPE that you're a STAR. WELL DONE. I know that your dad Mario will be very, very proud and your Mother will be spreading her love from heaven.....just for you.
Roger Ström (on 3/4/09)
Excuse me; I feel I must say something!
I am a Swedish Kevin fan, and shore it was only a TV program Kevin won ... eeh it was the world's largest IDOL final he won, not even American IDOL can compete. But that is not the big thing because he won something more; He won his princess and a whole Kingdoms hart, Kevin is a true superstar on and off the stage and he have show everyone that the impossible is possible if you really really want it. So of coarse you should be proud of Kevin, and you can’t get a better ambassador for Malta for shore, Kevin is Malta..! It is so empty here in Sweden right now you must send him back soon... Hugs to all of you from Sweden...

Since I heard our great and very talented Kevin Borg, that sung the song Where Ever some years back, I said to myself he is going to make it BIG, not only for Malta, but for the whole of Europe and Beyond. I can see him like a singer of the type of WestLife and Take That. I wish him a great and prosperous future and hopefully his lady in waiting will soon be a part of us, with her beloved family as well. Viva Kevin and his Family and Friends, Viva Sweden and last but not least, Viva Malta.

@ P Debono. I think you are referring to the wrong person because my comment here was full of praise for Kevin. I was replying to Mr. Joe Fenech who thought that we were making a big fuss for nothing!

It will be a good idea if Kevin Borg and Joseph Calleja were to give us a concert together. Kevin and Joseph are definately Malta's superstars at the moment. The Maltese have a habit of accepting a talent, only after some international success just as Kevin Borg and Joseph Calleja have done. The same thing applies to song lyricist and composors. I wait with eagerness when Kevin Borg and Joseph Calleja will record songs by Malta's 'Lennon and McCarney'. Here I am refering to our most talented Jason Cassar and Sunny Aquilina who have shown their song writing capabilities more than once in the past. Well Done Kevin. You made us all proud to be Maltese.
P Debattista (on 2/4/09)
@ Joseph Meli To be honest I don't think Malta deserves someone like Kevin representing the country in the Eurovision. It's a disgrace that I have NOT ONCE heard his song/s played on the local radio stations. And we are supposed to be promoting Maltese talent?!?!? However, I wouldn't be surprised if in the near future, Kevin would be approached to participate in the Eurovision... ...For Sweden.
Joseph Meli (on 2/4/09)
Kevin Borg first participation in the Malta Song for Europe was in 2006 and which this brought him to a respectable 8th place. A year later after he then ranked fourth place after making it to the final show. His entries in the selection referred were all penned by Jason Cassar & Sunny Aquilina who are the same composer & lyricist of Chiara’s ‘The One that I Love’ in the Eurovision Song Contest 1998. We now expect Kevin to be the next one to represent Malta in this contest. As far as I know he has made a hit in Sweden and would be doing the same in other countries soon. Well done Kevin, we are proud of you.
marco meli (on 2/4/09)
I don't know why all this fuss about kevin. If i where him i would not bother to come to malta or at least come undercover. We really should be ashamed of ourselves, a maltese guy makes a hit abroad and yet i haven't heard his songs played over the radio!!! We only heard of his success the day after he won and he had to find a swedish girl to make sucess out of his career! This truly reflect why we should stop participating in the eurovision also.
C.Pace (on 2/4/09)
Well done Kevin!!!! You'r great and good luck for more success
L. Grech (on 2/4/09)
Well done Kevin. I hope that he'll be given the chance to perform at this Year's Isle of MTV! Gluck!
John Schembri (on 2/4/09)
He won.......a deal with SONY and already has a GOLD record.
P Debono (on 2/4/09)
@ Joseph Micallef

2 million viewers watched Kevin perform the winning song, and he sang in front of a special purpose 14,000-seater stadium normally reserved for the likes of Madonna or Justin Timberlake.

Tell me how many Maltese people have done that?
P Debono (on 2/4/09)
@ Joe Fenech

Just a TV programme?!?! Tell me how many people (Maltese or foreign) have:

1. Contested and won Swedish Idol in which over 8,000 contestants signed up (NO Maltese has EVER achieved that).
2. Signed a record deal with Sony for four albums (again NO Maltese has EVER achieved that)
3. Released an album which has just gone gold (again I don't see any Maltese people who have achieved that)
4. Learnt Swedish in three months and conducted interviews in the Idol programme in SWEDISH
5. Filled up a 14,000-all-seater stadium before releasing his first song (I can only think of a handful of people IN THE WHOLE WORLD who have done that, let alone Maltese)
6. Recorded an album with people who have written songs for Britney, Madonna, JT, etc.
7. Pulled a crowd of thousands of people with him wherever he goes, except of course in Malta. The whole country should be ashamed of itself for not promoting someone like Kevin. All we're interested in are our immature political squabbles and the stupid joke of a concert that is the Eurovision.

We wouldn't appreciate real talent even if it stared us in the face.
Andrew Cachia (on 2/4/09)
@ Jamie Pace & Mark Grech

I was there.
It is cause of people like you, nothing is appreciated & morals are kept low. These are our ambasadors.... Deal With it !
nmifsud (on 2/4/09)
@ Andrew Cachia---- where you among those 100???

keep it up Kevin.
Oscar Cassar (on 2/4/09)
Good Luck Kevin. Hope we will still be having you around from time to time and hearing your voice in local performances.

Mr Micallef: yes it's not an amateurish programme, but Pop Idol exists round all Europe and most people watch it for a laugh.

People: just admit it!

However, well done Kevin - nice voice.. Changes to all those local singers.

Keep it up and develop your talent. You had your chance on TV but now get out of it and concentrate on the music - don't become a TV star. TV brings you up very quickly but then slams you down very quickly too.

@ Joe Fenech,

can you say "pessimist"? what's wrong with a very talented young Maltese man having a great record deal and some fans? And no, he didn't "only" win a tv programme. He won a national singing contest in Sweden, where the population is infinitely larger than Malta, and chances of winning were slimmer. He's reached his dream and did us proud. Wherever your bitter attitude is coming from, it's quite uncalled for.

Prosit Kevin. I just hope that in Malta you finally get the recognition you deserve.
Joseph Micallef (on 2/4/09)
Mr. Joe Fenech - for your information even if he won a TV program its a great achievement. This is not some amateurish tv program as we are used to in Malta. This is a really big thing with thousands of followers. In Sweden Kevin has been in the first position in their Top 20 for some time since then. He is very popular there. So why should't we be proud of such a thing? This is not like arriving second in the Eurovision and making it seem like we won it - or losing to a 1-0 score in football and saying "we did well!" as usual! Kevin won against 1000's of contestants. That's the reality. People who can't rejoice for such achievements are those who reconsider their attitude actually!
jamie pace (on 2/4/09)
@Andrew cachia....wooooooow,he must be the new elvis ...to expect 1000 fans to welcome him at the airport.....i can imagine you were among the few 100's that went to welcome him....if not, then reserve your comment for another day mate....
Joe Galea (on 2/4/09)
@Joe Fenech:
Kevin Borg won a great contest and hopefully his career continues to grow. The problem in Malta is that most of the radio stations never play his songs and very little publicity is given. It's nothing wrong to be patriotic. People like Kevin make us proud.
D.Galea (on 2/4/09)
@Joe Fenech

Alright Joe, He "just" won a TV programme so hyped up that at one point had 1.1 million views, where he had less then a year to learn their native language so that he could compete & he managed to sine out of 8,000 contestants thus getting a record deal with SONY. Of course he must work much to keep up his career but surely he came across an opportunity unmatched here on these island & made full use of it. It's not just about patriotism but more about a person who never gave up & against all odds managed to achieve his goal for international success. It's ironic that you should try to influence anyone by trying to play this guy down, if you don't like it you are free just to look the other way.

On my part I really admire this guy, well done Kevin Borg!
John Meli (on 2/4/09)
Well done Kevin, and could you give us details of your web-site? Inform us about your summer show in advance as I'm sure it would be fully packed by Maltese and fans from Sweden would come to Malta too!
Pierre Portelli (on 2/4/09)
Prosit Kevin. As a Maltese I apologize for not noticing your talent before and you had to go and prove yourself abroad for us to notice you. Good luck with your life.
Patrick Mifsud (on 2/4/09)
@Joe Fenech
Ezatt,ezatt...kemm il- TV programme erbaht Guz ?!
Joe Fenech (on 2/4/09)
Come on guys - be realistic: he's only won a TV programme!!

I know he also got a record deal, but believe me, that means nothing in today's world. Many companies in fact sign artists up in order to be able to control whose career to boost and whose not to.

Stop this patriotism at al costs attitude.

Andrew Cachia (on 2/4/09)
"Some 100 fans greeted him at the airport, along with his family and the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Mario de Marco.".....

We Maltese should be ashamed of ourselves.... 100 fans ONLY went to greet him ? In Swedem, 1000's of fans greeted him everywhere he went....

Ma napprezzaw xejn!

Rita Camilleri (on 2/4/09)
well done Kevin, and may you keep on going. Thank you for helping to promote Malta even more. god bless
