Bid to help parents of autistic children
The social barriers raised as a result of autism will be discussed at length by Ros Blackburn, an international expert who will be coming to Malta next month to talk about this disorder.
Ms Blackburn is being hosted by the Autism Parents' Association, which is working to raise awareness and provide parents with the information to overcome the challenges they faced during their child's development.
The association, which is marking World Autism Day today, urged the public to empathise with those parents whose children or adults were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Autism was not always visible and parents required constant support. The needs of children were not always evident but if everybody worked together towards a common goal such needs would be identified to ensure they lived a happier life.
"We need everybody's help to make our lives easier because, at times, it is harder to overcome the social barriers rather than the disability itself," association president Sandra Borg said.

Glad to see something mentioned about autism at last. In Malta the knowledge about autism is almost zero and ways to help autistic people live a normal life in society even less. I live in Sweden and my child is autistic. We have a marvellous network that helps my child, like habilitation with pedagogs, psychologists, speach therapists and other professional people. Then we have special schools with a teacher for every child and places where our child can stay a week every month so she can adapt to other enviroments. And oof course courses. Needless to say that all this is cost free because it is a right my child has.I know Sweden is very advanced when it comes to these things, and economically stronger, but we should have more than razett tal-hbiberija and eden foundation. So govt, wake up and start providing for this citizens themselves. These lack of services have kept from moving back to Malta which is sad. But better late then never, so hopefully things will get better.
