Malta loses 3-0 to Hungary
Malta's Justin Haber fails to save a free kick for the first goal during the 2010 World Cup qualifying soccer match against Hungary at the Puskas stadium in Budapest.
Hungary beat Malta 3-0 in a Group One qualifier on Wednesday to keep pace with leaders Denmark in their bid to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
The Hungarians have 13 points from six matches, behind Denmark on goal difference although the Danes, who beat Albania 3-0, have a game in hand. Portugal, Sweden and Albania all have six points and Malta one.
Hungary, playing in front of a capacity 35,000 crowd at the Ferenc Puskas Stadium, took control early on and forward Tamas Hajnal opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a free kick from 20 metres that went in just under the crossbar.
Malta stepped up the pace of their game in the second half but missed their few chances and substitute Zoltan Gera increased Hungary's lead 10 minutes from time when he netted a cross from Szabolcs Huszti.
Hungary rounded off their victory when Roland Juhasz headed home an excellent ball from Huszti in injury time.

I rarely miss a home match of the national team and during this campaign the Maltese team has improved in these last games. Even yesterday I saw the whole match on TV and as usual the goals were due to horrendoeus defence lapses especially the way we conceded the free kick for the first goal. In the Euro 2008 campaign we scored 10 goals but we still have to find the net this time round. In the matches against Hungary and Portugal our offensive threat was non existent and although in the last games we improved a bit we still lack confidence and are afraid to go to conclusion. As for the Australian players, Hutchinson is already 30 years old so we can only use him for a campaign or two at the most. The thing that annoys me here is that other small countries (population wise) have improved and made great strides fowards but we still seem to lack that extra effort against foreign opponents. I see more passion in watching an amateur match (MAFA or ISC) or a game of basketball than going to waste my money at Ta' Qali Stadium at the weekend.

no curmi it is not true that you attend the football matches.....................FORZA MALTA!!!!I AM SURE THAT IN A FEW MONTHS TIME WE WILL BE A TOUGH NUT TO CRACK WITH THE CALL UP OF TWO MALTESE-AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS IN THE NAME OF JOHN HUTCHINSON AND MANNY MUSCAT.they play in a league compared to the level of the championship of england(where michael mifsud play).apart from this more maltese players are expected to go abroad this summer.so I make an appeal to those reading this article to continue following this national team because in the near future we are going to have a team to be proud of.FORZA MALTA AGAIN!!!!

The national team has gone through ups and downs in the past and will do so again in the future ... give the guys a break ... no one can accuse them of lack of passion or commitment ... just go ask those who train twice a day ... we're in a tough group with some very good teams ... this team will grow together and hopefully we will have a team to be proud of in the coming years. We just need more players to play overseas since we have BY FAR the poorest national league in Europe ... MFA should concentrate on placing these youngsters away from the Maltese Premier League as soon as possible ...

@ charles aquilina. That's a clear example of the puerile comments certain people attribute when it comes to debate an argument. Please note that the period I referred to is following the 12-1 Spain defeat when the MFA had embarked the professional scheme with Michael Degiorgio being the first one to be sponsored by the Corinthia Group and Dobrev as Malta's national coach. Mr.Aquilina when you have time go through the recent past history of the MFA before putting any comments of which I'm sure you're not aware of. On statistics be sure that I can give a lecture to anyone who requests. Statistics are there to stay. Do compare each and every decade and you can get the right answers.

the fact remains that this team obtained the biggest amounts of points and goals malta had EVER achieved.I must remember you that the biggest defeat we suffered in football(12-1 against spain) came at those times where you seem to be proud of!!!

I bet Charles Aquilina is not a 50 year old + as I am saying he has been following the national team since he was young. Than definitely he needs a good lecture to compare each issue and edition of the national team. Saying that this team is the best ever is an INSULT to those who still have football at heart. Insinuating that there are intentions behind my comments is a further insult. Perhaps he is to remember that together with Mr.Anthony Bilocca, Victor Tedesco, Tony Debono, David Abdilla and others thanks to Dr.George Abela we were the ones who had founded the National Team Supporters Club,. when the National Team really reflected the progress and RESULTS. Have a look at statistics. There are there to stay. In the coming days I will be publishing the results and comparisons so conclusions will be made !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and how

shut up charles camenzuli.everyone knows what your intentions are together with people like you.i have been watching the national team from when i was young and the current squad is the best one.we have to remember that in the last group,we obtained the largest amount of points and goals.its true that in this current group we have not yet scored but nothing has gone in our favour yet.for example against denmrk we had 2 clear penalties.FORZA MALTA!!!!the thing we need this moment is the goal.I BELIEVE IN YOU REDS!!!!

And yet another defeat. Another negative milestone now that Malta once again failed to score. And considering that as for many it seems that the national squad has made SUCH positive improvement than perhaps a look at the statistics of the past 30 years or so will give a better impression. Perhaps it should be better for the MFA to issue a statistics review of the past 6 national coaches and the average results obtained....can anyone guess where the current national coach would end up !!!! And please MFA stop giving everyone the impression that the current national team , day after day seems to be the envy of the world or issuing press releases praising the support given. Or it was another milestone having 100 supporters at the Puskas Stadium and that deserves another media release. Illusions never got any results. Results remain there to stay. And in promos stop giving us such illusion by showing the Malta-Liechtenstein 7-1 farce !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im afraid something has to change with the national team; i was at the Denmark match and it was just embarresing; no desire, no concentration, no organisation and no defence! Ok it was against a good Denmark side but lets be honest they didn't even need to turn up to beat us; we beat ourselves; which is just not good enough.

Wel said Charles Aquilina! K Curmi obviously has no clue!
I doubt he even watched the game or has been following the national team!
Our players are amateurs and that's a fact and they give all they can! The hungarians and all the other teams all have players well establshed playing in big european leagues! How can we ever compare? But to sat that Malta should not participate or to slag our players is disgusting especially when you see that the group we're in is the toughest!

F Curmi, its people like you that the MFA shouldn't take notice of. Had you watched the game you wouldnt be speaking that way! I suggest you do yourself a favor and refrain from commenting on issues you definitely do not understand in!
Well done Malta you put on a good show! The score does not reflect your performance!

Malta now has Dr Joe Mifsud as Vice-President at UEFA. MFA should push towards changing the format of the world cup or at least the Euro cup like there is in other sports where teams are grouped according to their ranking and so each match can go either way as all teams have a chance to win. Example.if Malta is ranked 37th, it will play in a group made up of teams ranked 35th to 40th. I think the Malta team will have more supporters at ta' Qali by winning , even if to small countries, than losing over and over again.

Hungary are fighting to go to the world cup, K Curmi, they are first in the group ahead of portugal.sweden and denmark.infact they are on level points with denmark.when we play away it is always difficult to obtain points.i don't know if you ara aware of it, but today we played with a very inexperienced defence

Pls MFA don't take part anymore in these tournaments .Its a shame that we're playing with our level and lose again. Don't forget that we won with this team a few months ago .
