The National Energy Policy will be published by the government in the coming days, pointing the way forward for more efficient use of energy and a reduction of emissions and dependence on oil, Resources Minister George Pullicino said today.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that he would shortly also launch a consultation on new building regulations including safeguarding third party rights during construction projects.

He said the government was also planning to open an outlet in Valletta to showcase Maltese quality wines.

Mr Pullicino said works were well in hand at Ta' Qali on the building of an animal care centre, which would be the first of its type in Malta. It will be functional next year.

Mr Pullicino reviewed the work done by his ministry over the past year, including the consultation on the updating of the waste management strategy, and said the Opposition had still not announced its views on this issue.

He also referred to initiatives for energy saving, saying the scheme for assistance for the purchase of solar water heaters had so far drawn 1,082 applications. There were 221 applications for assistance for the purchase of photovoltaic systems.
