George Abela's nomination to the presidency becomes official this evening when the House of Representatives debates and votes on a resolution for his appointment.
The resolution will be moved by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.
Dr Abela will be sworn in at a special sitting of the House of Representatives on Saturday morning. He takes office at Noon.
Dr Gonzi will this evening also move a motion to thank Dr Eddie Fenech Adami.
The motion says that: "This House expresses its appeciation for the dignified manner in which Dr Edward Fenech Adami carried out his duties to the people of Malta as President of Malta, and while thanking him, wishes him a long and happy life and more service to the country."
