The St Luke's Hospital chimney has been emitting smoke due to mechanical problems with the burners inside the boilers, compromising the mixture, the government said today.

It said that although the hospital had carried out repairs, these did not solve the intermittent smoking problems. Engineers have been asked to look into and solve the issue as fast as possible.

Moreover, the management has taken measures for the installation of a new system of boilers to replace the current set of steam boilers which has been in operation since St Luke's Hospital was opened.

The specifications of this new hot water system are in the final stages of preparation and a call for offers is imminent. The hospital incinerator, the government said, was dismantled in the first week of December 2007.
