University students are expected to elect their student council on Thursday and one group contesting the election has promised to make a nurse available on campus within the first 100 days of taking office.
The student group, Act, said yesterday it had entered into talks with the Junior College Students Council (KSJC) in order to make a nurse available in the clinic at the University Student's House.
Act's candidate for the role of social policy commissioner, Renè Cilia, argued that students deserved that their health be given priority in order to enhance their quality of life. Addressing a press conference yesterday, held in front of the University's international residence in Lija, Act presented its proposals for the strengthening of international opportunities.
The candidate for the role of international co-ordinator, Francesca Scerri, outlined the team's commitment to improving the situation of students taking part in an Erasmus exchange programme and attending such programme in Malta.
She insisted that not all students have the possibility to participate in Erasmus, arguing that Act in KSU would lobby to give this opportunity to all students. Nearly 700 students participated in an Erasmus exchange between 2000 and 2007.
Act proposed to set up a scholarship info point at Student's House on campus in order to encourage more students to apply for scholarships. "The government has managed to create a lot of opportunities. It is now up to KSU to promote them," Ms Scerri said.
Another proposal was to lobby with the University residence to ensure that students can share rooms with other students having similar priorities so that they would be able to "study or party without annoying their roommate".
Act is supported by 11 campus organisations and will be fielding 11 candidates for Thursday's election.
