Pele's reported remarks suggesting that Brazil forward Robinho took drugs were a misunderstanding, both men have said.
"Maybe there's been a misunderstanding because I didn't say that at all, maybe they took him the wrong information," Pele said in comments broadcast on Brazilian television.
Robinho said at Brazil's training camp: "I think it was a misunderstanding, Pele made a mistake but I don't have any bad feelings against him. I've never had any type of problems with drugs, if I had I wouldn't be here today with Brazil."
A statement on Robinho's website (http://www.robinhoofficial.com) on Tuesday demanded that Pele retract the comments.
"A formal retraction from Pele will be requested, if what he said was not misinterpreted by the media that published it," the statement said.
"And if Pele does not come forward, he will have to deal with his very unfortunate comment in court."
Robinho was raised at Santos, the Brazilian club where Pele spent nearly his entire career.
Robinho was likened to Pele as a teenager because of his physique and trickery on the ball.
