The Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) and the Sports Exercise and Rehabilitation Centre at St James Hospital (SERC) have just renewed their partnership for another four years.

The SERC will continue to offer medical services to the country's leading athletes who form part of the MOC Centre of Excellence scheme.

MOC secretary general Joe Cassar said that, through this agreement, the MOC will be in a position to ensure that athletes preparing for international competitions receive the best medical services.

"At the MOC, we believe in looking after the athletes' health. Apart from this medical scheme, the MOC also runs a Functional Diagnostic Laboratory," Cassar said in a statement.

"This allows the technical department and coaches to monitor the athletes' progress. This year, a large number of athletes are making use of these facilities ahead of the Cyprus GSSE and the Mediterranean Games in Pescara."

After the success of the first three-year co-operation agreement with the MOC, director Maria Bugeja said that St James Hospital fully supports the Olympic Movement in all its initiatives.

MOC director

Joe Borg Cardona, the Malta Table Tennis Association president, was last night elected as MOC Director.

Borg Cardona, who polled 21 votes, fills the post left vacant by Mark Cutajar after the latter was elected as the MOC Director of Sports last month.

The other candidates in yesterday's elections were Branko Vlahovic (20 votes) Leonard Falzon (8) and Alexander Zammit (3).
