Pretty Bay bridge to be dismantled

A bridge in Pretty Bay, Birżebbuġa, will today be dismantled by the local council following an eviction order by the Land Department.

Mayor Joseph Farrugia said he had no choice but to take the decision because the council could not convince the department otherwise.

He said the bridge was built following unanimous agreement between the council and residents to facilitate the crossing to and from the square and the promenade when it rained heavily.

The department said the bridge was built illegally, without a permit from the planning authority and the owner of the land.

It said it was not against any structure that served the purpose of this bridge but it would not tolerate anyone taking the initiative without complying with the law.
