MTA renews Sheffield Utd sponsorship
The Malta Tourism Authority this afternoon renewed its sponsorship of Sheffield United for £350,000 per year - the same amount paid last year.
A two-year contract was signed with an opt-out clause for the MTA after one year.
MTA chief executive Josef Formosa Gauci said that the UK was the most important core market for Malta’s tourism and the authority’s was to try to improve the perception of Malta in the UK, where many still saw Malta as the place their grandparents went to.
The TV coverage of Sheffield United, whose players carried the visitmalta logo on their gear, he said, was much more than the MTA could ever afford so there was a lot of value added in the sponsorship. He said that even more than 35,000 tops with the visitmalta logo were sold.
Mr Formosa Gauci said Sheffied Utd had shares in four football teams around the world and the agreement included the promotion of Malta.
The MTA was also pushing the June Isle of MTV concert being held in Malta in Sheffield and the club was planning a training camp for the Malta Football Association in Sheffield in August.
It was estimated that around 25,000 attend championship matches of Sheffield Utd.

How about spending the same amount of money on part-sponsoring a NASCAR race car in the U.S? These cars cover 300 to 500 laps practically every weekend on oval circuits between the 1st week of February and the 3rd week of November. These NASCAR races are watched by crowds varying from 150,000 to 300,000, such as at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This is the most popular form of auto racing in the U.S.

Over and above those present, millions of viewers watch these races – 3 to 4 hours - on TV, channels Fox, TNT, ABC, ESPN and Speed! Millions more access theses races and the news about these races on the Internet, and others listen to the radio broadcasts.

If Malta wishes to see an increase in tourists from the U.S. – many of whom need to be educated about Malta’s existence – this is one good value for money “vehicle” for promoting our islands (pun intended).

when one considers that the Championship in the UK is seen by more viewers than Serie A, i think MTA did the right thing, although i don't think Malta can afford the sponsorhip if they are promoted to the Premier League.
