MCG workers sent home - Factory may be closing down
Workers at MGC Electronics Ltd were asked to go home today "because the factory is closing down".
Attempts to confirm the situation with a factory representative were unsuccessful but a person at the factory who refused to be named confirmed that because of the international situation there was a possibility that the factory would close down.
He also confirmed that workers had been sent home but said that no other information was available.
The factory, which employs 62, is at the Mosta Technopark and manufacturs encapsulated and laminated transformers.
A worker told timesofmalta.com in an e-mail that employees at this factory were not represented by any union.

As somebody who has friends at MGC, I cannot help but feel really really sorry for them. I can't imagine what the heads of the families must be going through in this sad hour.
Instead of bickering amongst ourselves, we should all pull together to see what can be done.
J, sorry it had to happen to you mate....

Can you please elucidate us on what you call a contraction in the economy for two consecutive quarters Grima?

LAST TIME I CHECKED, THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, THROUGH EUROSTAT, CONFIRMED THAT MALTA HAS OFFICIALLY BEEN IN RECESSION SINCE THE LAST QUARTER OF 2008. (Negative growth of Malta GDP in the 3rd AND 4th quarter of 2008).
NOW EITHER SOME PEOPLE ARE SO MENTALLY CHALLENGED THAT THEY CANNOT ABSORB ANYTHING BUT THE CHEAP AND LAME PROPAGANDA ON tan-net Tv, OR LIKE GONE-ZIPN, THEY PREFER TO ACTIVATE THE DENIAL DEFENCE MECHANISM AND BURRY THEIR EMPTY HEADS DEEP IN THE SAND.
Either way, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to the affected workers - I know it won't help telling you that there are thousands of people in Malta in similar circumstances. Maybe Gone-zipn in his cosy and cushy surroundings will one day decide to help them slightly... after all, he's been handing out 5,000€ in cash to illegal people (not to mention the millions of euros destroyed every month) like we have struck gold. The earlier we get the rid of this long-expired moulding stale government, the better.

N. Grima - An economy goes officially into recession after 2 consecutive quarters of negative growth. Well, we have just ended the second quarter N. Grima. Do some research before you speak up, or if you don't have time for research, just sit back and read the news.

@ L Galea
it's amazing how people like you see the world from a red-tinted glasses...
do you think that things would have been different had Labour been elected.
Grow up! no wonder the more things change, the more they remain the same!!!!!

Actually, Malta is officially in a recession. This is based on the standard definition of a recession, namely, two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

@ N Grima
Malta IS officially in a recession. The standard definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth, and MAlta has suffered from that.
Nonetheless, we have not been as hard hit as other developed countries thanks in no small part to our local banks' prudent lending strategies and proper risk management policies. However, our reckless construction firms have caused a huge bubble which you will see is about to burst, and this is likely to have serious repercussions on the Maltese economy.

I notice that prophets of doom and gloom are quick to comment, negatively of course, on such news items, but fail to send one positive comment when solutions are found in spite of all difficulties. What a boring hobby!

I hope you were sarcastic in that comment. Malta is indeed in a big recession.
When things are going right in Malta, doesn't GonziPN take credit ? He never utters these words: "you have to thank the rest of the world, not me". Now that things are not so good we repeatdly hear "blame the rest of the world, not me!". Yeah right.

If the factory is to be closed, is it not possible to re-tool and re-train the workforce to locally make solar panels or solar water heaters - things that are in demand or will be even more in demand if the price is right.

get your head out of the sand , yes THE REST OF THE WORLD are in Recession, and yes Malta is suffering due to others , i suppose you like to blame Gonzipn for this 1 too as per usual

L Galea - how I hate people who ride roughshod and laugh at other people's misfortunes. Remember people in glass houses should never throw stones. They will suffer tremendously. People like you diehards of the Labour party (because not all labour supporters are like you) laugh at other people's misfortunes because yours is a negative party, a NO party. Go on and party on our mishaps. The people will judge you in four years time.

@ L.Galea... Malta is not in a recession, the rest of the world is. Blame it on that rest of the world.

WAS THERE NOT SOMEONE WHO SAID THAT WE ARE RIDING THE WORLD RECESSION AND THAT MALTA IS NOT IN RECESSION?
