GWU will not accept Go dismissals
The General Workers’ Union said it will not be accepting dismissals from Go plc.
The union’s statement follows a declaration by the company’s management that its workforce had to be reduced by 350.
The union said that a meeting of the Go Workers’ Central Committee this afternoon decided that the GWU should request a meeting of the consultative committee which was made up of union officials and top management to clarify the situation.
This was in view of a letter sent to workers on Wednesday reminding them of the company’s voluntary early retirement scheme.
The committee also decided to encourage the company’s other unions to unite in one front to safeguard the workers’ jobs

Seems that the big news is yet to hit us. GO's own news portal has reported that job losses are expected to amount to 750 not just 350. We need answers! http://di-ve.com/Default.aspx?ID=72&Action=1&NewsId=59349&newscategory=31

Any company shouldn't make a loss. What about the shareholders and their investment? Should we let all of our Maltese savings go to waste and let any company crumble? People invest and take risks in these companies because they trust they make the correct decisions and get a profit which will yield in dividend. While I understand all the workers plight, we have to understand that a company is there to make profit. They are not stealing anything, they investing millions and competing in a fierce environment. If they lose the battle and be uncompetitive, subscribers (read all of us) will flock to another provider and then 1350 employees will be redundant. As for reducing adverts, it is an option which can backfire and the company loses ground. Executives though, SHOULD get less money on the same principle to be more competitive. They should possibly be paid extras in shares which would yield dividend to them if their work is profitable. Of course, luxury cars and other fringes are a big NO.

If there is no agreement inhibiting Go from laying people off , who the hell does Tony Zarb think he is to tell a company how to run its buissness? If the owners of Go bought the company knowing that they have to carry the burden of exess for 3 years , and then after 3 years they can reduce the work force to increase profitts and be more competitive to the benifit of their customers so be it. Maltacom in the past was not just a telephone company , it was also a branch of the social security dept. paying the wages of quite a few sunbathers. Just one more thing , remember Hotel Phoenicia.

Yes GWU, fight for us as Mr. L Galea told you. Like you did for us at the Phoenicia Hotel.

GO shareholders surely will ask for profits and if the company has excess workforce, yes unfortunately they will have to GO. And yes also, if there is unnecessary luxury spending, that has to stop. No one is willing to invest his money to subsidize an idle workforce. Just keep in mind that GO is a public liability company and its legal duty is to safeguard the investment done by the shareholders. If the GO management does not do that, then they will threaten the jobs of the rest of their workforce.

Go should be ashamed of themselves. So at the first sign of trouble their solution is to fire 350 workers. GWU got it right - just because Go is a big corporation it doesn't mean it can shirk its responsibilities to employees, their families and to their customers in general.

L Galea you sound as if you came out of a Socialist Jurassic Park. Wake up and smell the coffee. Since when a Union is going to dictate to a private company how to invest its money?

I'm with GWU on this. Maltese workers are not to be treated as a disposable commodity.

The GWU has known for the past 3 years, ever since Maltacom was privatised, that the agreement withTecom was that there would be no forced redundancies for 3 years. Those 3 years now end next May. The GWU should have shown its guns with the government prior to privatisation; now it is no use crying over spilt milk. Go are perfectly within their legal rights to make redundancies and one cannot say that they have not been generous with those who accepted early retirement. If only all the other companies who have laid off workers had been so generous.

Much of this country's woes are due to the gwu wanting to keep excessive numbers of workers with companies like Shipbuilding, Go plc, Drydocks. Those days are gone folks. And yes, i am employee. angry that a few people in this country feel that they are owed something by the rest of us.

GO should reduce its top executives's high salaries and distribute the savings to those GO wishes to dismiss. No redundancies from GO are acceptable. They made millions in profits. So in today's world economic crisis, they had better save from top executive salaries and bonuses and purchasing of luxury cars for top management, instead of shouting about dismissal of workers.

Mr.Grima
The loss was only due to the payment of early retirement schemes.
How many millions profit did it make the year before?
You are certainly not an employee Grima because otherwise you would not have written the way you did.
Go on GWU, fight for us as you always did and don't take any notice of those who always defend employers and foreign owners instead of the workers.
Workers unite.
United we stand, divided we fall.
Let's not allow GO to go ahead with its redundancy plans.

Yes well done GWU, since GO announced a loss something need to be done to ensure sustainability of the company.
So GWU, while you are trying to defend those 350 workers from dismissal you will be jeopardising the rest......... again Well Done.....

@ Ms Chetcuti -- Actually no, GO announced a loss, caused no less than by Government's own mishandling of the pension scheme. Prosit. When it was taken over from Government, it held heavy baggage in the form overstaffing. GO is a public company, it is not the ETC. Most of these 350 workers would not have had a job in the first place if Maltacom had not been acting as a social corporation. GO gave these workers years to find another job, also benefiting from a good voluntary retirement. They have no business at all fighting to keep their jobs.

Well done GWU. Keep up the good work.
UHM and others - please follow suit and fight for workers' rights. In these hard times, saving jobs is sacrosanct.
GO should spend less on their adverts and save jobs / families.

Didn't Go recently announce that they made a profit during their last financial year?
