As part of its 35th anniversary celebrations Air Malta organised an evening during which it presented awards to its top cargo customers for 2008.
The award Top Cargo Agent 2008 went to B.A.S. Ltd while the award for excellent performance in cargo traffic was awarded to M.A.L. Services Ltd, SMS Cargo and CACS Ltd. ST Microelectronics (Malta) Ltd, Dedicated Micros (Malta) Ltd and Actavis Ltd were awarded the Top Cargo Shipper Award for 2008. UPS Malta was awarded the Top Courier Agent for 2008 while DHL Express Malta, TNT Express and FeDex GSP Malta were given the award for excellent performance in courier traffic. Lino Bonello of B.A.S. Ltd was honoured with the Long Time Supporting Personality 2008 for his outstanding commitment to the industry and Air Malta over the years.
Joe Cappello, Air Malta's CEO, thanked Air Malta's cargo customers for their support and loyalty throughout the years. He said that for 35 years Air Malta has not only supported the development and strengthened the Maltese tourism industry but was also pivotal in the development of the local manufacturing industry. He added that without an excellent distribution network of air links to main European hubs, it would not have been possible for industries such as the microelectronics or the pharmaceutical companies to set up shop in Malta.
Mr Cappello said: "In 2008 Air Malta carried 7.4 million kilogrammes of cargo, 750,000 kilogrammes of mail and 1.2 million kilogrammes of courier cargo. Such results were achieved thanks to your continuous support. We have together developed this market that is generating a positive ripple effect on our country's economy".
He added: "The year 2009 is expected to be a difficult year for Air Malta, however, even in such times the airline will remain committed to the country and the industry. Time has proven that Air Malta is the only airline really committed to Malta and its industries."
