Valletta Mapei are the winners of the 2009 National Cup.

On Sunday, they beat rivals Fleur de Lys Westen in three straight sets to make sure of an unsurmountable advantage in the series.

Mapei won the first two sets with Robert Balzan, Paul Vella and Ron Stivala producing their best play for the side. FDL, without captain Jonathan Chetcuti, came close to clinching the third set but Mapei were looking to avoid another play-off and went on to clinch the final set 27-25.

In the women's National Cup semi-final, Flyers raced to a two-set lead against Fleur de Lys.

FDL tried to get back into the game but Flyers were too superior on the day and went on to book a place in the final against Paola Hibs Candy on April 18.

On Sunday, Flyers played their second game of the weekend when facing Hibs in a women's league match. Hibs needed three points to mathematically secure their sixth consecutive title and at the end of the day their objective was reached.

The first set easily went Hibs' way but in the second set Flyers produced a better showing and also took the lead at 22-20.

However, with Alison Borg and Carmen Gauci in fine form, it was the Paolites who went on to win the set 25-22.

Flyers setter Lindsay Cordina was very much in evidence in the third set. But, spurred by their ambition to win the league title, it was Hibs who prevailed in the third set to close the match at 3-0.
