The vice-president of the European Commission, Gunter Verheugen will be in Malta this Friday for a short visit to address a business conference organised by the Malta representation office of the European Commission.
Mr Verheugen, who is responsible for the enterprise and industry portfolio in Brussels, will also be having talks with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and will address the media together with Finance Minister Tonio Fenech.
Mr Verheugen was the commissioner responsible for negotiations with Malta prior to the island's accession to the EU in 2004. Indeed, Mr Verheugen, who in the previous Prodi Commission was responsible for enlargement, was considered to be one of the most instrumental figures in Malta's membership bid.
