Sad scenes at Tal-Ferħa

Some scenes have been left out because they are too disturbing. Filming and editing: Paul Spiteri Lucas

Three puppies were saved from a cruel death this morning thanks to a raid by the police and the Abandoned Animals Association at a former hospital at Tal-Ferħa, Għargħur.

Other dogs were not so lucky and a number of skeletons and dog body parts were found. The dogs had starved to death.

AAA’s Freddie Fenech said his association received an anonymous telephone call about the place. It checked it out and then alerted the police.

The three saved puppies are now being cared for by a volunteer. They will be vaccinated and flown to a new life in Germany.

Mr Fenech thanked the Naxxar police for their assistance.

@ Giov. Demartino Ghal darba naqbel mieghek. Il-Maltin ma ghandhomx jivvutaw jekk ma jaqblilhomx. La il-kaccaturi u lanqas min ihobb l-annimali. Jien lil min jiksirli saqajja ma nbuslux wiccu. Il-Gvern ghandu jirrapprezenta lill-poplu u mhux vice versa.

Jien nahseb u forsi certa nies ma jaqblux li min ghandu kelb ghandu jirregistrah. Il-flus li jingabru ghandhom imorru biex tittejjeb l-infrastruttura ezistenti u jinxtraw per ezempju "Pet ambulances" + jghinu lill-organizzazjonijiet u persuni eccezzjonali bhal Freddie. JIen ghadni kif hallast 40€ il-Germanja biex irregistrajt il-kelb... u qieghed bla xoghol. Inhossha f'buti imma naf li il-flus marru fejn ghandhom imorru u jekk il-kelb jahrabli.. kif dejjem jaghmel... ghal menu issa ghandu isem, indirizz u numru fejn icempluli! Spanja ( fejn kelli inpoggilu CHIP ta' bil-fors) tissussidja lil kull min jirregistra l-annimal tieghu u jpoggilu CHIP. Il-flus imorru wkoll biex jitpoggew kaxex b-boroz biex dak li jkun meta johrog il-kelb ma "jinsiex" jigbor il-hmieg warajh u b'hekk jinzamm l-ambjent nadif.

OH MY GOD!!!!
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS???
THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED AND IF NECESSARY JAILED!!!!
Charles Grech (on 30/3/09)
@ Giov. Demartino Its pointless trying to talk with partisan canvassers. As fro The Saint Francis Foundation for Animals they respond to emergencies and when they do they do not ask about the political colour of the injured or sick animal as they do it voluntarily and out of their love for these poor creatures. Yes we will not vote FOR PN CANDIDATES ONLY - EVEN IF THEY POSE WITH ANIMALS DURING THE MEP ELECTION CAMPAIGN TO TRY TO STEAL OUR VOTES. PL AND AD HAVE GENUINE ANIMAL LOVERS WHO WE TRUST AND THESE PARTIES HAVE ALWAYS DELIVERED WHAT THEY PROMISED AS FAR AS ANIMAL WELFARE IS CONCERNED SO REST ASSURE THAT WE HAVE A VERY GOOD CHOICE ON WHOM TO CAST OUR VOTES. ALL WE ASKED WAS FOR THE PRIME MINISTER AND MINISTER TONIO FENECH TO WAIVE OFF DUES SO THAT TWO VEHICLES DONATED TO THE SAINT FRANCIS FOUNDATION COULD BE COMMISSIONED TO RUSH SICK, INJURED AND ABANDONED ANIMALS TO VETERINARIANS. The PN administration does not care so much so that one of the vehicles has been garaged since 2004. HE WHO LAUGHS LAST LAUGHS BEST.

@mr de martino - i am sorry i am only seeing your message now as i would have had a few suggestions for you to pass on to the Archbishop. the Church needs to speak up about such attrocities for a starter as it does on other matters. interesting article u have in today's il-mument but u did not really mention what can be done in a conrete manner or what Government or the Church have done and are doing for that matter.. it just stops at being a PR exercise....

I would like that someday I meet someone who does such things to these adorable creatures,so I can ask him..... WHY? what on earth can a puppy or a dog could have done to deserve this?!! I can understand that you can argue with another human but can't understand that you can do such thing to animals. And the court have to give proper jail terms to who is caught and not just suspended jail terms!
emanuel magrin (on 28/3/09)
@ Gioanni De Martino
Mr. Demartino please note that you have got your arithmetic very wrong.
Animal lovers who are ready to vote in the interest of animal rights count more than 45,000
plus. We know as we have constant contact with same. Yes we will show insensitive politicians in government that every vote COUNTS. Our love for animals comes before partisan politics. This government's feelings for animals is correctly measured by Albert Einstein's saying - "GHIDLI KIF TIMXI MA L-ANNIMALI U NGHIDLEK KIF TIMXI MAN NIES"
One of the vehicles donated to the Saint Francis Foundation was in 2004. In the meantime we experienced government allowing BRAND NEW BMW'S (tac-COKAM CONFERENCE) to be sold - to blue-eyed well off persons - with no taxes at all.

The vehicles donated to the SFFA will only be used as animal ambulances and animal rescue vehicles to rush sick, injured and abandoned animals to veterinarians.

Yes. Mr. Charles Grech is Correct. NO ANIMAL AMBULANCES, NO VOTE

GiovDeMartino (on 28/3/09)
U billi ma nivvutawx se nirrangaw xi haga? Possibbli ma tirrealizzawx li billi ma jivvutawx mija, elf, ghaxart elef ma nkunu qed insolvu xejn? Il-politika ma tidhol xejn haw. Jista' gvern jaghmel mirakli ghall-annimali, sakemm jibqghu "nies" li ghandhom tant hdura ghall-annimali kollu ghal xejn. Din bhall-indafa. Jista' jnaddaf il-gvern. X'jiswa jekk il-poplu jibqa mahmug.
charles Grech (on 28/3/09)
@ Giovanni De Martino

Its true that more doers are needed but the main culprits are the politicians in government.

I invite everyone to put pressure on The Prime Minister and Minister Tonio Fenech to waive off dues being registration tax etc. and allow The Saint Francis Foundation for Animals to use two vehicles donated by foreigners to be used as animal ambulances and animal rescue vehicles.

Show government that the values of animal lovers are not going to be traded especially before the MEP elections. BEWARE of window dressing by the government to alienate your minds off the issue of animal rights. Soon enough government will be boasting of the so called "AFTERCARE CENTRE AT TA' QALI' TO STEAL YOUR VOTE. This is nothing more than a BUNKER THAT CAN TAKE ONLY 50 small animals.

Tell government that candidates under the PN ticket will NOT be worth waisting ink on during the voting.

LETS ALL SHOW THAT WE ARE A UNITED FRONT TO GET THE BEST RESULTS FOR THE ANIMALS. OUR MAIN WEAPON IS OUR VOTE. WE WILL USE IT THIS TIME.

NO AMBULANCES, NO VOTE
NO ANIMAL RIGHTS, NO VOTE

A very sad news item. I wish to recommended Alfred Fenech for all the help that he is giving to the poor dogs. I am not interested in politics and other razzmatazz that has been written in the blogs. But I think that any law regardiing animal cruelty in multiple forms has to be re written down and valued according to the times that we are living. We have old laws regarding animal cruelity and NO GOVERNMENT CARED TO AMEND THEM. Anybody can prove me wrong? Once more if it wasn't for people like Alfred Fenech and others I personally know of, the plight of these poor dogs would have been disastrous!

Franco Farrugia (on 27/3/09)
@ Karl Callus - Let us put things into perspecitive, please. Otherwise, we would be doing much more harm than good.

NO FOREIGNER is in a position to teach us, the Maltese, how to look after animals; and no foreigner is in a position to tell us to stop hunting and trapping - and I say this, fully aware of implications. Allow me to expand.

Foreigners abroad have their own problems as regards animal cruelty. Suffice to mention the Spanish bull-fights or the British fox-hunts. Just to mention two!

This does not mean that we should not reflect on what anyone, foreigners included, have to say.

The fact that hunting and trapping must stop is not due to foreign interference; nor should it have been due to EU legislation and legal action: hunting and trapping should have been gradually stopped by governments these past twenty-five years! Hunting and trapping, in other words, has to stop because the Maltese are against it, and because common sense, mingled with respect for nature, demands it.

And as for the Church, there is no harm in people being faithful - let us not mix things up, please.
Karl Callus (on 27/3/09)
Each time I hear these stories I feel like cancelling my visit to Malta. I get enraged. Cruelty to animals has been reported since ancient times... what is to be condemmed not only who does the crime but mostly those who do not enforce it.. i.e THE GOVERNMENT. Jail is the only way forwards. Culprits should also be forced into doing social labour and psychological assesment before being let loose. Anyone doing this to animals is more than capable of doing so to people. We are dealing with psychologically unbalanced criminals here!! Why is nothing being done! What a shame for Malta.. Each time I speak to someone abroad about Malta the only subjects that are brought forward (apart from the pathetic "Nice beaches and lots of sun" ) are: Cruelty to animals, uncontrolled hunting, polluted air and lack of education. I mean, come on! By going to church you can´t consider yourself a Christian. First we have to learn to respect each other and the beings we live with! That is the rule of life. Even Dogs know that!!

a. sciberras (on 27/3/09)
mr. de martino -
in point form can you advise what the government and the LOCAL Church did for animals in the last 20 or 30 years?
personally i alluded to the Government and the local Church because let us face it - the fact is that they are the most 'powerful' groups in Malta. democracy or not, it is only them that have the ability to do something on a larger scale.
and no i do not think that Government is doing a bad job of everything! on this matter i think however that concretly it still has not done anything
Marco Incorvaja (on 27/3/09)
I have nothing to say much... but tal-misthija!! I mean how come can you do such things to a dog? I agree with Roderick Cristina fully agreed with you.

Perhaps our friend Giovanni De Martino can convince the Prime Minister and Minister Tonio Fenech to waive off dues to government and allow the Saint Francis Foundation for Animals to use two vehicles donated by foreigners - with foreign number plates - to be used as Animal Ambulances.

while i wish the coulprits to burn in hell, I also wish to say that I called Freddy and got me one of these pups. Its the last one on the video. Me and my gf named him P-Chan and though he is still traumatized and very scared he will get used to us and will learn for himself he found himself a loving home and Tal-Ferha will only be a bad memory happened in another life.

Still I can never understand how anybody could hurt such adorable creatures

Joseph Schembri (on 26/3/09)
@laurence schembri: How I empathise with you my friend! For me the death of of a dog is a traumatic experience. I did not watch the video. But somehow our legislators and law enforcement agencies seem more preoccupied with running after some kid with a joint or some 17 year old having a naughty chat on the internet rather than finding and prosecuting the monsters who inflict such suffering on God's creatures.

Joseph Schembri (on 26/3/09)
The moral development of a nation can be judged by the way that animals are treated - Mahatma Gandhi. Being a vegetarian, he included here those animals that people use for food like pigs, cows and chickens.

Pigs for example as intelligent as dogs yet some people find no problem in having them treated deplorably for all their lives then killing them barbarically and eating them.

R. Gatt (on 26/3/09)
Only one solution to this sad situation - neuter both the poor pups once they are feeling better and the dam ned ba$ tard$ who put them through this horrific ordeal.

Microchipping should be compulsory for all companions (a.k.a. pets) and heavy fines including jail terms should be handed out to any caught abusing or mistreating such beings.
Proceeds from these fines could then be distributed to registered animal carers/foundations as financial aid.

Other than that, a companion is adopted and not bought or bred.
Stop Breeding - Start Adopting.

Apart from the so-called public figures who never miss a chance to steal the limelight, this case is very sad and is also shockingly barbaric. I fail to understand who is responsible for such neglect and the villagers are also up to an extent responsible as they must have known that dogs were being kept there.
ELAINE GENUIS (on 26/3/09)
Perhaps a petition could be signed by all those Maltese citizens who care and then handed to the Maltese government, in order to punish BY LAW all those sick people who are cruel to animals. So maybe if they are imprisoned and fined (u mhux multa zghira ta!!) they might learn once and for all that cruelty is a GRAVE OFFENCE and definitely NOT TOLERATED.

For the past 10 years I,Moira Delia together with a number of animal lovers and ngo's have been working non stop for animal welfare, fighting for animal rights, saving strays and educating children in schools about the respect one should have towards animals, promoting and neutering strays and finding good loving homes for unwanted animals....I,myself on many occasions have put forward to people who work in the ministry responsible for animal welfare, various suggestions to improve the situation but it seems to fall on deaf ears...SHAME..!One thing that the ministry did was,get an animal ambulance....which is still parked and never used because the license was never paid!!!Please wake up,we need to seriously get down to doing some proper work with new laws, proper neutering system and a good and functionable emergency animal service.Too many are suffering!
Franco Farrugia (on 25/3/09)
I strongly urge the Police and other authorities to leave no stone unturned to find the culprits and bring them to court.
We cannot sit idle and allow such barbaric atrocities taking place in our country.
Let us remember that animals are innocent being - they are the victims, as much as babies and defenceless children are.

As has been said, the place BELONGS to someone! So, someone MUST answer for these barbaric actions and be responsible for this.

Becky Cachia (on 25/3/09)
Ghastly.

However, I don't quite understand where you expect the Church to come into this..? Regardless of religion, any person with a sense of right and wrong.. or any ethical streak for that matter.. will realise the gravity of what it actually means when a human being inflicts suffering on helpless creatures. The Church deeming this behaviour as sinful is hardly effective... especially when one keeps in mind that perhaps a conscientous Catholic probably wouldn't have committed this crime in the first place.

I just hope these criminals get what they deserve.
emanuel magrin (on 25/3/09)
Only animal lovers like Rene Scicluna were jailed.
Stop Breeding once and for all and have all animals microchipped.
True animal lovers are hindered by this government like when they killed 11 healthy dogs under the care of Animal Rescue Malta on the 14th March, 1996. And guess what?
The public officers who were found guilty by the ombudsman - of abusing their powers - were all given promotions in the Civil Service instead of facing accusations before the Public Service Commission.

And what about the two vehicles that we were donated to use exclusively as Animal Ambulances. They are still garaged as this government wants us to pay around EUR24,000
registration tax since these vehicles have foreign number plates.

All the politicians in government knows about the above and still they do not care.

We can only help animals by using our votes properly. BEWARE OF WINDOW DRESSING JUST BEFORE THE MEP ELECTIONS. VOTE FOR GENUINE ANIMAL LOVERS ONLY.

@C.Sammut yes i understand what you saying, but i don't think this is a question for the church but more so for the Police and the Maltese governing bodies to get off their backside and deal with such cruelty on the islands. This is not projecting a good image to outsiders. A friend of ours telephoned me from abroad and they too apparently watched the vedio and read the comments on the times, but as far as the church i think they only seem to be concerned with their flock and don't seem to poke their noses into this kind of problems - i should also mentioned that this doesn't only happens in Malta and Gozo but all over the world*, BUT ofcourse we are now at this moment in time talking about the problem effecting the whole of our country and its up to everyone good citizen to keep a sharp eye and report such cruel incidents. Thanks to the German volunteers for their kind gesture and effort to help these puppies to live safely in a new country. J.Siddard /Aguis
Franco Farrugia (on 25/3/09)
@ Mr Charles Sammut: I do not give a toss whether such things happen abroad or not. I am Maltese, for my sins, as I feel at this moment, and I care about what happens with animals in MY COUNTRY!!!! That atrocities take place outside my country is no consolation and no excuse.

You say: Neither is harsh and cruel treatment reserved only for dogs and cats.
Then, let us all together join in putting a stop to this harsh and cruel treatment against animals, which are also sentient beings like you and I, deserving of respect and dignity as much as the human being, and which are vulnerable. Don't you agree that something should be done about this?

You also write: But then how would the Church go about explaining why humans and animals are afflicted by so much suffering?

I, for one never mentioned the Church. But this kind of suffering is human-induced and easy to stop because it is not like an illness which comes about by nature. This is a kind of suffering that we, human beings, are inflicting on those more vulnerable than us. That is why it has to be stopped.

Many have written that they are ashamed to be Maltese on account of these despicable acts.

Unfortunately these atrocities do not happen "Only in Malta". Neither is harsh and cruel treatment reserved only for dogs and cats.

Some have questioned why the Church does not voice concern about this rampant injustice. But then how would the Church go about explaining why humans and animals are afflicted by so much suffering? Human suffering has been attributed to Man's fall into sin. But animals? Somehow there is a missing link somewhere. Or things are not as some would have us believe.
Alia Grech (on 25/3/09)
Harsher sentences should be taken up to penalise those acussed of abusing and harming animals! It is up to parliament to propose and implement such laws which act as a deterant.

And most of all I beleive that animal assosciations should not have to relym so much on donations and help to protect animals-these should be paid for as part of Malta's annual budget. It is a true shame !
Adrian E. Camilleri (on 25/3/09)
Well done Freddie Fenech and his Association. Keep up the good work. This latest story is very disturbing ideed, but shouldn't the police authorities look into this issue closer, as this place would seem to be used by certain 'villains'. Come on you guys, get down to it! Well done though Freddie.
Vania Lamanna (on 25/3/09)
I recently started volunteering with a non profit association here in Naples (www.animalswithoutlimits.com)and i promise you, the cruelty which is in Malta is rampant here too, if not worse. We have to also deal with issues due to the camorra's strong hold on this area, which means sometimes volunteers fear for their safety too.But we keep going, in the hopes of making that little difference to an otherwise cruel world. It still is beyond me how stiffer prison sentences along with HIGH fines are not imposed.Of course people keep doing this sort of thing-they practically get away with it! Incidentally, may I encourage animal lovers everywhere to do their share and stop sticking their heads in the sand.Volunteer if you can(yes, it can be heartbreaking but think of the ones we manage to help!), and if you cannot, please donate supplies like medicine, collars, food, blankets, or money to non profit organisations. We need all the help we can get.Even a small difference is still a difference.

Absolutely agree with a. sultana on pet neutering. We need loads of educational campaigns - prevention is always a better option to cure (punishment for crimes). I am sure thousands of kittens and puppies are done away with yearly (drowned etc) just because pet owners could not be bothered to have their cat/dog neutered.

On the 20/7/1993 I have found an abandoned kitten on the Rabat Road, Attard, took her home to join my other three and called her Kitty (not original I know), two weeks ago Kitty died of a kidney failure, the Vet did say that there is little hope for her survival, I still sit by the garden door waiting for her to come in today.I hate to bring religion into this, but, do these people go to mass on Sundays. We are a small nation, let us stop shaming ourselves.
On the 26/12/1007 at 7.35pm I had to put my Benjie (cat) to sleep, old age, 27 year-old (our years), he gave us so much love it is hard to explain, let me put it this way, I have never seen a Vet shedding a tear, he did on that day. At present I have a six-year-old Whiskey and he`s driving me to drink,a truly wild beautiful cat,I found him (not it) in an alleway in Gudja, right now he is next to me watcihing me tapping this. Please be kind to animals.

It is my understanding that persons at Tal Ferha holding and breeding dogs possibly for fighting has been known in the village for some time and mention may well have been made to authorities. The fact is that the authorities appear to act only if a written complaint is made against those perpetrators. That expectancy in a rural area and within a society whose attitudes are often close to medieval is clearly not practicable. Perceived personal physical threat is real and founded with some grounds for credibility. If such cases are to be confronted successfully then either the law, the application of law or the rules of engagement require review to meet current contingencies and effective education for the enforcing authorities given. Enabling trained qualified inspectors of the MSPCA to have powers of entry, investigation and arrest in cases of animal welfare default should and could well be part of a solution.

As usual Freddie Fenech is there to save the day and Thank God for that. Thanks also to the person who had the decency of reporting this. Although i honestly feel very sorry for the dead dogs, i am pleased to read that the three puppies are being cared for now and will be homed. I have visited the AAA in Marsa many a time and the love and dedicated given to the dogs kept there is truly astounding. We need nore people like Freddie, Romina and Karen of the AAA, who dedicat their lives to these adorable animals. Well done

YET AGAIN, TODAY, I AM DISGUSTED TO BE CALLED A MALTESE CITIZEN.
THESE ARE DISGUSTING ACTIONS, TAKING PLACE BY ATROCIOUS PEOPLE, PEOPLE WHO ARE MONSTERS!

AND THIS IS WHAT WE GET WHEN ANIMALS DO NOT HAVE PROPER, RESPONSIBLE AUTHORITIES TO PROTECT AND DEFEND THEM, EVEN WITH THEIR LIVES, IF NECESSARY.

THAT IS WHY I CONSTANTLY WRITE IN CERTAIN NEWSPAPERS ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF ANIMALS.

THE RESPONSIBILITY IS NOT ONLY ON THE PERPETRATORS BUT ON THE WHITE-COLLAR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS WHO ARE DUTY-BOUND TO PROTECT THESE ANIMALS AND NOT JUST THREATEN ONE AND ALL THAT ANIMALS WILL BE PUT DOWN!!!!!

WE MUST DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

DISGUSTING. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!

Humans have made such a progress.....yes indeed!!
Roderick Cristina (on 25/3/09)
I would like that someday I meet someone who does such things to these adorable creatures,so I can ask him..... WHY? what on earth can a puppy or a dog could have done to deserve this?!! I can understand that you can argue with another human but can't understand that you can do such thing to animals. And the court have to give proper jail terms to who is caught and not just suspended jail terms!
a. sciberras (on 25/3/09)
when is government going to do something and enforce neutering and fight against animal abondonement and dog fighting? any maltese doing this should not be called a catholic, and the same goes for anyone standing there and just watching! and we make such a huge fuss about someone wearing a costume of a nun or a priest, and impersonating the Risen Christ! where is the Church in all this? have we forgotten the teachings of st. francis and st. anton? this is happening everywhere around malta - go to msida/gzira in rue d'argens where there is the big green government building just before the traffic lights, go to marsa near vgt for example. were it not for a few kind-hearted individuals and ngos these animals would all starve.

I can't even get myself to watch the video. The more I am in the company of 'certain' humans, the MORE I GET TO LOVE ANIMALS. What a sad story. Who ever permitted these things to happen should be ashamed. How could one be so cruel?
All very true about dogs. How much more about human beings?? I expect none of these bloggers are Pro Choice i.e. pro killing unborn babies. Such videos are even more horrible of course . yet some are not ashamed but say it is a right instead.

I take my hat off to the Germans for their generosity, the British RSPCA also for their kindness and interest towards animals in general and last but not least the MALTA AND GOZO SPCA. a big Thanks from the majority of the Maltese and the Gozitans who look and care for the poor abondoned creatures. A big thanks also to SkyNews for bringing us to light towards cruely to stray cats in other parts of the world maily in parts of China. J.Hermsee (the Netherlands)

I have watched the vedio in disgust to who ever is responsible for this barbaric act, however i say to animal lovers not to watch for fear of disgust and repression to animal cruelty in many southern mediterranean countries NOT excluding the Maltese islands, and loathing the person or persons that is responsible and the local police should do their utmost to bring who ever is responsible to justice, we watched this vedio in Britian and i would imagine these images have travelled half way wround the world by now, please report any suspicious animal cruelty to the local SPCA in Malta and Gozo. We always succeed to bring such cruely to light in the UK as well as many other parts of the world just like the recent news from China--------------------------- ManyThanks. Mrs.Iris.Watkins RSPCA

What a sad story. Who ever permitted these things to happen should be ashamed.. Can' t beleive that there are persons who are so cruel. Happy to know that these puppies will be given a new life and hopefully to caring families.

I'm utterly disgusted.
When will people learn (and obviously I'm not referring to the many animal lovers that go out of their way to give love to these helpless creatures).
