Brenda Mallia, 39, of St Paul’s Bay, was today remanded in custody until sentencing after she admitted to stealing nine handbags from women in a number of shops. The thefts took place between last December and earlier this month. She was also accused of making illegal use of credit cards she found in the bags, as well as cash and mobile phones.

Inspector Anthony Portelli said Ms Mallia had stolen the handbags to fund her drug habit. He recommended a rehabilitation programme, warning that unless her drug problem was solved, Ms Mallia risked losing custody of her two-year-old son.
