Occupancy in hotels and other places of collective accommodation dropped by 3.4 per cent in January when compared to January 2008, to reach 31.5 per cent, the NSO said yesterday.

It said total arrivals in January reached 44,938 of which 36,186 were foreigners. Total nights spent in collective accommodation establishments reached 325,385, a decrease of 13.8 per cent over January 2008, with the largest drops being in the three-star and four-star hotel categories. The average length of stay was 7.2 nights.

The total bedstock in January was 37,097, an increase of 2.5 per cent compared to January 2008, but the number of beds in Gozo and Comino was down by 1.6 per cent to 1,742.
