The Dun Filippu Borgia Society has taken legal action against the Curia and the government over the fact that some of its land has been transferred to the Joint Office - a body which administers former Church property passed on to the State. The society, based in Birkirkara, and Canon Carmelo Calleja filed a judicial protest against the Archbishop's Curia, the Prime Minister and the Joint Office.
The society is invoking a decree by the 15th century Pope Urbanus VIII which said that no one could take over property belonging to the Collegiate Church of Birkirkara and the Dun Filippu Borgia Society, not even the Archbishop's Curia.
The society is, therefore, asking the Civil Court to declare that no one could transfer property of the Collegiate to the Joint Office.
Lawyer Reno Borg is appearing for the society.
