One of the suspected leaders of yesterday’s riot at Safi detention centre was arraigned before the Magistrates’ Court this morning but denied any involvement, saying he was asleep at the time.

Jawey Berdi, a migrant from Guinea, was accused of causing more than €1,164 in damage to the detention centre, disobeying orders and forming part of a group intent on causing a crime.

He was remanded in custody.

Informed sources said another migrant is expected to be arraigned tomorrow while a third is being treated at Mt Carmel Hospital.
