Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has received a police caution for throwing a coin at Burnley fans during a League Cup match in November.

The 30-year-old from the Ivory Coast was cautioned for common assault when he appeared at a London police station yesterday.

The incident happened as Drogba and his team-mates celebrated his goal, his first of the season, 27 minutes into the game at Stamford Bridge.

He was on the receiving end of at least one missile as visiting Burnley fans hurled abuse at the players and later admitted that he had flung an object back into the crowd.

He later admitted a FA charge of violent conduct and was banned for three games.

Strachan keen to keep Dutch striker

Gordon Strachan wants Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to stay at Celtic. The former PSV Eindhoven striker has scored in just one game this season and his contract ends in the summer.

The player was dropped for the League Cup final and will also miss out on Holland's World Cup qualifier against Scotland.

"Of course I want Jan here next year," said Strachan. "I want all my good players here.

"I'm the guy who wants him but if he wants 100 grand a week I'm not the guy who decides it in the end. It's not really my task. I indicate who I want to stay and that's it."

Mourinho must stay says Maicon

Inter defender Maicon wants Jose Mourinho to remain as coach of the Italian champions beyond this season. The former Chelsea boss joined the Serie A club last summer and looks set to win the Serie A title.

"We have been at the top for the last three years," Maicon said.

"It is the fruit of years of hard work and you can see the results. There is still a long way to go until the end of the season but it is fantastic to see Inter consistently leading the standings.

"The work philosophy has changed a lot since the arrival of Mourinho and we are looking to understand his thinking in the shortest time possible. I hope to have him as coach for as long as possible."

Lennon signs new Spurs contract

Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon has signed a two-year extension to his contract to keep him at White Hart Lane until 2014.

Lennon, whose recent form has seen him tipped for an England recall, was not thought to be among the top earners in Harry Redknapp's squad.

"We're delighted to have him. He is still learning the game but he has real ability," Redknapp said.

The England Under-21 star, who joined Spurs from Leeds in 2005, has enjoyed an upturn in fortunes since Redknapp's arrival.

O'Neill hints at Barry exit

Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has hinted that he could be ready to let Gareth Barry leave Villa Park should they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Barry looked set to join Liverpool last summer only for the move to break down after the Reds failed to meet Villa's £18million asking price.

"Will Liverpool come back in for Barry? I don't know. I can't say what Liverpool are thinking.

"If we qualify for the Champions League, then subject to the terms of a new contract being right, I think there would be a decent chance that Gareth Barry would stay. If not he could ask for a transfer and I won't stand in his way."

Klinsmann pleased to face Barcelona

Bayern Munich coach Juergen Klinsmann feels his side have drawn the best team in Europe after being paired with Barcelona in the last eight of the Champions League.

The Bundesliga champions will travel to the Nou Camp for the first leg, the scene of their 1999 final defeat to Manchester United.

Klinsmann's men crushed Sporting Lisbon 12-1 on aggregate in the last round, but the coach knows the Catalan giants will be an altogether different proposition.

"This is a huge incentive for all of us, to mix it with the best team in Europe at the moment," he said.

"Barcelona are a tough nut to crack. But we are capable of beating them. That is what we believe."

Ferguson expecting 'Pool spending spree

Alex Ferguson has re-opened hostilities with Rafa Benitez by disputing the Liverpool manager's claim that he has spent more on transfers than the Spaniard.

Benitez suggested last week that Ferguson had spent £100m more than he had, but the Manchester United boss retaliated by ordering his staff to tot up each manager's spending since the Liverpool boss took over at Anfield five years ago.

Ferguson said: "I was amazed at that one. I got some of the people in the sports technology department to check that out. He's well ahead of us in spending in the last five years.

"He said our spending power is more than theirs but he has spent £24m more than we have. I think you will see Rafa producing an absolute spending spree, I think that's an absolute certainty now he has signed a new contract."
