Tunnels under St George's Square

I congratulate the government for scrapping plans to excavate a car park underneath the historical St George's Square, Valletta, which has withstood many ups and downs throughout Malta's history.

Quite a number of years ago, while I was going out of the former Civil Service Sports Club in Archbishop Street, I noticed some Public Works employees taking their lunch-break in the entrance leading to the tunnels underneath the square.

I noted that the ceiling was made up of two large inverted 'V' stone blocks throughout its construction. The tunnel was blocked by a wall and the workmen told me that the tunnel led to some important buildings in the area.

Since at the time it was being said that a car park was to be dug underneath St George's Square, I wrote to The Times protesting that in this event, the tunnels were going to be destroyed to the detriment of Malta's cultural heritage. Thankfully and hopefully, this danger is now a thing of the past.
