Updated: New political group launched

Libertas EU has launched a political institute and party in Malta with leader Mary Gauci announcing she will be contesting the European Parliament elections on its behalf. Other candidates may be announced at a later stage.

The new pan European group wants to create a new, democratic and open European Union. European group leader Declan Ganley, an Irish entrepreneur, told a news conference this morning that the group will have more than 100 candidates contesting the EP elections all over the EU.

He spoke against the way the Lisbon Treaty was tackled saying that the power of democracy in Europe was dying with all decisions being taken by people who were not democratically elected.

Europeans, he said, were living in a post democratic society where no one was held accountable.

The new group, he said, was pro-European and believed in the pooling of nations' sovereignity but not at the expense of democracy.

With the way the Lisbon Treaty was handled, Brussels had ignored the democratic voices of France, the Netherlands and Ireland. In Malta there had been no debate on the treaty before it was approved, he pointed out.

Ms Gauci, who is the former deputy leader of Azzjoni Nazzjonali, explained that Libertas was committed to a real reform of the European insitutions. It insisted that the EU should give more attention to each member state, and facilitate better pooling of sovereignty.

""Libertas stands for democracy, transparency and accountability at the heart of the European Union. Libertas is an effective new way of doing European politics."

The group's five major proposals are:

A short treaty not more than 25 pages to be accepted by referendum in all member states;

Democracy – all EU laws decided by MPs – national or European;

Accountability – scrutinise the Commission and all other law makers;

Transparency – everything open/transparent notwithstanding approved exceptions;

True subsidiarity whereby national parliaments decide the legislative programme – bottom-up, not top-down.

Asked about the group's political ideology, Mr Ganley said it could not be categorised left or right since it was focusing on democracy, rather than issues.

Ms Gauci described illegal migration to Malta as a national wound but stopped short of making any concrete proposals as to how the problem should be tackled.

@ Michael Cutajar So did Joseph Muscat and ALL the Labour party campign against EU membership. Does them standing for election make them opportunists ready to jump on the gravy train, as they in fact did over the past 5 years?

It's not the fragmentation that I fear most. It is the fact that our simple-majority-deciding-who-gets-to-be-prime-minister superimposed over a very complex voting system will be further compromised with sliver parties. Strictly speaking, using only "Number Ones" to determine the simple majority is mathematically wrong given that very often, the "number one" is forfeited to the "number two" (and so on) on the ballot when the first (and subsequent) candidate(s) is (are) dropped.

Example: suppose Ms. Gauci runs in the next election and gets 1000 "number one" votes. Not enough to be elected, so she is dropped off the ballot in round two, when her "number two" votes come into play to determine who is elected in her district. But that is 1000 votes that are effectively lost from the simple majority that determines who becomes prime minister.

And when elections are decided by around 1000 votes, this arithmetic is more than just an academic exercise.

Perhaps this looks like the ideal party for Vince Farrugia. Why doesn't he contest with them since he has the same ideals as Libertas and not the the EPP ? Ohh but probably ideals are not an issue here so better contest with well know PN as he stands a better chance to get on the gravy train

big time opportunist. he campaigned so hard against membership.

Hooray! As it is now, Malta has no say in its internal affairs especially on the imposed illegal immigration debacle, so it can't get any worse. If the new party pledges to imbue Malta with the peoples' power to eradicate illegals from Malta, then all concerned should enthusiastically endorse this new party. It won't be easy, but it must be done. The holier-than-thous and the week-kneed sympathisers of illegal criminials should thus be left in the lurch!!!

VIVA MALTA!

Mr.A.Charles writes: "...his primary aim is to scuttle the Lisbon treaty and that means goodbye to our sixth MEP."

But does he realise that without Mr.Ganley's campaign, Malta would actually have lost its EU COMMISSIONER for 5 years out of 10? Does he have any idea how VERY IMPORTANT having a Commissioner is for the smaller countries, who usually have few or no nationals heading the top posts of the EU bureaucracy?

L.Galea.
I have remained thoroughly Maltese even though Malta joined the EU, but unlike you I appreciate the acheivements of Malta rather than being negative all the time aginst the EU and the advantages we have gained through membership.

Ahhh.....The E.U. Bruxelles " Big Box ". attracts many willing candidates......ALL willing to
reform the unreformable.....ALL willing to decide ....if " Patè Fois " is French ......

they will " get down to business " and give the FINAL verdict......Like they did with the
size and shape of bananas ?
Go around the " Bourse " in Bruxelles.....See how well they tackle "tornadoes" in the

Tony Formosa, People who write here are not bloggers....

People who write BLOGS are BLOGgers.

To anybody concerned, without going into the merits of the issue raised, I wish to, for the sake of clarification, make it known that the comments posted by John Borg were not made by me, another John Borg (Birkirkara FC).

* Certain bloggers seem to have difficulty in understanding a simple one-liner, which only emphasizes the fact that the new party has nothing to do with A .S.Libertas.

this looks like the ideal party for Ellul Bonici. Why doesn't she contest with them since she has the same ideals as Libertas and not the European Socialists ? Ohh but probably ideals are not an issue here so better contest with well know LP as she stands a better chance to get on the gravy train

The lisbon treaty is simply the eu constitution mixed up so that common people will not understand it as had been said by Giuliano Amato. Go to http://www.cnimalta.org/amato.html from where you can download the speech and hear Giuliano Amato himself saying it.

The lisbon treaty should be consigned to the dustbin of history where it rightly belongs because it simply takes more control from the member countries and gives more control to the eu while removing the veto from more than 50 remaining areas.

That is what our politicans voted for when they approved the lisbon treaty.

Tony Formosa and R. Pace: This political group has as much right to use the word 'libertas' as your sports club did when it was formed. If this party had anything to do with A. S. Libertas it would be called A. S. Libertas. Did A. S. Libertas 'disassociate' itself from the Italian Christian Democratic party back in 1983, seeing that 'Libertas' used to appear on their party emblem? If you're a 'hardworking' association (as R. Pace put it) perhaps you should avoid pedantic comments.
A.Charles (on 21/3/09)
Mr Ganley is a highly colourful Eurosceptic who funds Libertas and his primary aim is to scuttle the Lisbon treaty and that means goodbye to our sixth MEP.
Marco Cremona (on 21/3/09)
@Joseph Rizzo

I do not agree.

This group of people (the number of which is not disclosed but is irrelevant) believe that none of the existing parties embody their ideals so they decided to organize themselves into a political party to them forward.

What's wrong with that? This is the very essence of democracy.

I admire their courage in coming forward and thank them for raising the political discussion to a higher level.

Now let's discuss their ideals on their merit - and nothing else.
r pace (on 21/3/09)
Could have found an original name and not a name associated with the Christian Democratic Parties. As my friend Tony Formosa wrote earlier, this party should disaccociate itself from the hardworking AS Libertas.
Anthony Formosa (on 21/3/09)
Well done Libertas start to talk with the people and make their voice heared.

@ Libertas, Please also declare to TONY FORMOSA that you have nothing to do with the statue of liberty. :)
TONY FORMOSA (on 21/3/09)
* The leaders of this new political party MUST declare that they have nothing to do with ASSOCCJAZZJONI SPORTIVA LIBERTAS which was founded in 1983.

Line up, line up.... anybody else please to join the queue. how many parties/groupings are now running for the EP, I've lost count. With our 5 or at best 6 seats, can we really afford all this petty fragmentation?? 3 parties is ample. PN, MLP the heavyweights and AD to provide a modicum of balance.
