SDM launch campaign for KSU election

The Democratic Christian Students SDM vowed this morning it would never accept changes to the stipends' system.

Addressing a news conference at the university, organisation president Lauro Fava said SDM would be contesting the forthcoming KSU elections, having turned down a proposal by the other contesting party - made up of a group of other student organisations, so that only the president and vice-presidents would be elected through a vote with the other posts being agreed upon by the different student organisations.

SDM, Mr Fava said, turned down the proposal because it believed in the democratic vote.

He said that SDM had played a major role in getting a collective agreement signed between the University of Malta Academic Staff Association and the government. But even though this agreement was signed, SDM said that through KSU, it would push for better quality education. Some lecturers, Mr Fava said, were still missing lectures and results for the January tests not yet issued. SDM wanted to give students a stronger voice through a system whereby complaints directly reached the authorities.

Mr Fava promised that SDM in the KSU would set up a €25,000 student opportunity fund to help students attend conferences abroad. This would be funded by sponsorships.
