How sad it is to hear people complain about the amount of speed cameras being installed throughout the island. Has our society evolved to a pitiful stage where arriving earlier at a desired destination is more important than saving lives, whether of human beings or those of animals we see squashed to death on our streets every day of our lives? These people should stop and think.

There are times when our children get carried away when driving after an evening out. They tend to underestimate the power of the machine that's under their control. In a moment of madness it can turn into a killing machine. Is this what we want for the sake of getting home earlier?

My only disagreement with the installation of these cameras is that people are being informed of their location. It is a farce. People slow down when they see the sign and then step on the accelerator when they feel they are safe from the camera's lens.

Speed cameras should be moved around. Also, I fully agree with a correspondent who recently suggested hand-held radar guns so that streets, especially in inhabited areas, can be patrolled randomly. That is where the real danger lies. That is what needs to be done if we really want to protect lives from these speed freaks. Take Swieqi. Living there is like living next to a racing track. Screeching tyres and over-speeding cars in this vastly inhabited area are a part of everyday life while children and tourists walk the streets risking their lives.

So thumbs up for speed cameras. Hopefully, hand-held radar guns in inhabited areas will be next.
