UEFA Cup holders Zenit St Petersburg were knocked out of the competition at the last-16 stage by Udinese yesterday.

Zenit, 2-0 down from the first leg in Italy, could only win the return match 1-0 at the Petrovsky stadium to bow out 2-1 on aggregate.

Former winners CSKA Moscow were also eliminated by Shakhtar Donetsk after the Ukraine side won 2-0 at home to overturn a 1-0 defeat in the Russian capital.

Ukraine will have two sides in the quarter-finals after Dynamo Kiev ousted compatriots Metalist Kharkiv on away goals after the tie ended 3-3 on aggregate.

Udinese, a modest 12th place in Serie A, are the only remaining Italian side left in Europe this season after Milan's demise in the previous round and the exit of Inter, Juventus and Roma from the Champions League.

The Italians were forced on to the back foot by Zenit who enjoyed the majority of possession but failed to add to a 34th-minute goal from Ukraine midfielder and Zenit captain Anatoliy Tymoshchuk who headed in Victor Fayzulin's corner.

Shakhtar had two of their Brazilian contingent to thank for firing them into the last eight at the expense of 2005 winners CSKA.

Attacking midfielder Fernandinho thumped in a 54th-minute penalty after being fouled by Pavel Mamaev and then Luiz Adriano turned the tie in Shakhtar's favour with a near-post finish with 20 minutes remaining.

An own goal 11 minutes from time secured Dynamo Kiev's place in today's quarter-final draw.

Kiev looked set to be eliminated by their less-illustrious Ukraine rivals Kharkiv who had taken a 3-1 lead at home on the night to have one foot in the last eight, only for Andrei Berezovchuk to put through his own net for the decisive goal.

Penalty shoot-out

Manchester City are through to the quarter-finals after they ousted Danish side AaB Aalborg after a penalty shoot-out last night.

The Premier League club, who had won the first leg 2-0, saw that advantage cancelled after late goals by Luton Shelton and Michael Jakobsen took the game into extra-time and eventually penalties.

Here, Shay Given was City's hero when he saved efforts from Thomas Augustinussen and Shelton to seal a 4-3 penalty win.
