Jose Maria Olazabal has agreed to be a 2010 Ryder Cup vice-captain if he fails to play his way into the team, skipper Colin Montgomerie said.
"He has said to me he will want to try and play in that team," Montgomerie told Sky Sports News. "If not, he has accepted... he will be part of the backroom staff.
Twice US Masters champion Olazabal has his work cut out to play his way into the Ryder Cup side. He is way down at 570th place in the world rankings.
Montgomerie said he had heard favourable reports about the Spaniard's performance as Nick Faldo's vice-captain.
"He was very good with Nick Faldo," said the 45-year-old Briton.
"I wasn't there but apparently he was exceptionable which I would anticipate anyway."
