Parliament will debate the resolution to appoint George Abela as President on April 1, and this will be followed by the swearing-in ceremony on April 4.

The House Business Committee agreed yesterday that, following Dr Abela's appointment, the House would adjourn for the Easter holidays and would meet again on April 20.

In the meantime, the House would continue debating the Bill on motor vehicle registration and that on broadcasting. This would be followed by Bills amending the equality act and industrial relations.

Leader of the House Tonio Borg said that, when the House met again after the Easter holidays, the first item would be the debate in committee of the Rent Laws.

Labour Party Whip Joe Mizzi later noted that certain committees were issuing statements and reports instead of reporting to the House. Although he was not raising a complaint, he felt this could undermine the work of the House. Dr Borg agreed that Standing Orders should be observed.

The matter is to be discussed with committee presidents by Dr Borg and Mr Speaker Louis Galea.
