Farmers and herdsmen are this year being given €29m in aid as part of the 2007-2013 budget, Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino said today.

Speaking at the Corinthia Hotel, Attard, during the launch of this year's funding programme, Mr Pullicino said such aid should continue to help the sector become more sustainable.

He said that this year, for the first time, farmers and herdsmen who apply for aid would be able to see the progress of their application electronically from home.

The minister said €15 million would be directed to farmers in disadvantaged zones and €10 million for nine agro-environment measures.

The €29 million are part of a total fund of €100 million for farmers and herdsmen which cover 2007-20013.

Registration for the aid has to take place between March 23 and May 15 at the Pitkalija, Ghammieri or the government farm in Xewkija.
