Sliema councillor Julian Galea did well to highlight the problems the council is facing with the ADT regarding the Residents Parking Scheme (March 10) as it is a fact that the majority of Sliema residents point fingers at the Sliema council for the impasse. A correspondent had labelled ADT as a "red tape monster" - he should have added the word "useless" as this is most appropriate to describe ADT.
About a year ago a working group was set up by the Sliema council to discuss the proposal to turn George Borg Olivier and Amery streets into one-ways given that their carriageway, with parking on either side, cannot take two cars moving in opposite directions especially when a tourist coach, ambulance, mini-van, delivery truck or any other heavy vehicle is involved.
With a hospital and hotel in George Borg Olivier Street, a hotel in High Street and a big supermarket in Amery Street, traffic and pollution have increased tremendously.
As I had formed part of the working group I regularly enquire with the council about the matter, however to my disappointment each and every time I am told that the ADT are still evaluating the proposal.
Why the ADT have to take so long is beyond me, however as they are "useless" I should not be surprised.
It is high time that the councils are given direct responsibility for traffic management in their respective town/village thus eliminating bureaucracy and ADT's delaying tactics.
