The captain of the Italian merchant ship Ft-Foce was evacuated to Mater Dei Hospital this afternoon after suffering a suspected heart attack.

The Italian, Gioacchino Tangar, 48, was assisted by AFM principal medical officer Lieutenant Colonel Robert Galea and hoisted on board an AFM Alouette helicopter while the ship sailed 12 nautical miles off Malta.

It was the third helicopter rescue in 24 hours, after an AB 212 helicopter piloted by a joint Italian-Maltese crew rescued a man and a woman who fell off a cliff in Bahrija during the night (see separate story).
