Maltese workers' wages and salaries saw the lowest rise in the European Union between the third and fourth quarters of last year.

Figures released by Eurostat yesterday showed that wages and salaries in Malta only rose by 0.7 per cent, in a period when the island went into official recession.

Next in line were France, whose wages rose by 2.6 per cent, and Denmark, where wages and salaries rose by 2.8 per cent.

The highest rise was seen in Romania and Latvia with rises in excess of 17 per cent. The rise for the whole of the EU was 4.6 per cent.
