President invites Pope to visit Malta

President Eddie Fenech Adami had an audience with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican today, just over two weeks before Dr Fenech Adami ends a five-year term which also started with a Papal audience.

The Vatican said they confirmed the good relations between Malta and the Holy See and also discussed regional issues.

Dr Fenech Adami described his meeting as very emotional and said the Pope was conscious of the history and the strong bond which still existed between Malta and Christianity.

The President said he had formally invited the Pope to visit Malta.

Dr Fenech Adami, who is accompanied by Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, also called on Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican Secretary of State.
