No infected influenza vaccines had entered Malta, the health authorities said yesterday.

A consignment of the annual influenza vaccine, meant for circulation among 18 European countries, was infected with the avian influenza virus.

Experts said it could have triggered a pandemic.

Baxter International last month confirmed that the contaminated flu virus material was released from a plant in Austria.

The lethal concoction was discovered by a researcher in the Czech Republic after laboratory ferrets that had been injected with the vaccine suddenly died.
