Customs seize 10 million smuggled cigarettes

Customs officers seized more than 10 million contraband cigarettes at the Freeport on Wednesday night. A spokesman for Customs said the cigarettes, destined for the local market, were found in a container supposedly carrying bathroom items. The spokesman said taxes on the cigarettes would have exceeded €1.5 million.

He said the police were immediately informed and a magisterial inquiry was opened.
