Alternattiva Demokratika this morning presented a judicial protest against the government on behalf of 14 Maltese and EU citizens residing in Malta.

The plaintiffs are requesting the government to return the VAT on car registration illegally collected between May 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008.

AD chairman Arnold Cassola told a news conference outside court that the number taking part could have been larger but a good number of people were deterred by the prescriptive period of two years for the filing of a court case while others were scared of repercussions in being seen as acting against the government.

Spokesman Ralph Cassar said that people had a duty to pay taxes but it was also the duty of the government not to collect money illegally.
